The McWillliam brothers have been preparing for this all their lives. Since childhood, John, Thomas and Michael have made music together.” Our first gig was as young kids in the basement of our parent's home,” reminiscences Thomas,” which was always filled with music."

Their maternal grandmother, Mary Edith Kersten, was an accomplished pianist and vocal accompanist. Their father's step-mother was a live organist for silent films. Their uncle Kenan Kersten sings popular classics and is regularly compared to the Irish tenor John McCormick; whereas his brother, Kevin Kersten, is a classical guitarist who studied with Sophocles Papas, a renowned student of Andres Segovia. Uncle Kevin also sang for Ted Lewis ("Me and My Shadow").  The lineage of this talented family goes on and on, including their mother, Mary Kersten, who along with her family performed vocal harmony pieces on Ted Mack's highly-rated "Original Amateur Hour."

Fueled by different channels of musical influence -- Thomas favored earthy acoustic songs while Michael preferred electronic grooves and John hard rock -- the brothers played together and separately in several groups until 2000 when John invited Michael and Thomas, who were already in a group together, to one of his acoustic shows as an audition. "I asked them if they could envision themselves on stage with me as their new singer and guitarist,” recalls John.

Less than one month later, Joe Puerta (Ambrosia, Bruce Hornsby and the Range) saw ON A SUN compete against several of the top bands in the region as part of a Shepherd Express sponsored event.” Strong Musicianship and excellent live performance make [ON A SUN ] a must-see act!” wrote Shepherd Express's Brian Barney. The winners of 25 hours of studio recording time, Puerta swiftly offered to produce ON A SUN's first demo.” As a band, we enjoyed the intricate crafting that Joe brought to the table,” remembers John, "working in the studio with him seemed like home."

Having spent the next two years diligently performing in and around Milwaukee and Chicago, ON A SUN was recognized by Summerfest, one of the largest music festivals in the world, as being the right fit for its Mountain Dew/LAZER 103 Rock Stage affording them the opportunity to open for national headliners each year since then.

"There is true talent in this band. No fluff. The resonating guitar arrangements and authentic vocal style of John McWilliam are singular in a sea of commonness. Lyrics rich with truth, woven to music with hypnotic pull and rock power ,ON A SUN is a rare find!” offers Vic Thomas, Summerfest's associate entertainment director.

Musician and producer Peter Buffett (Hollywood Records, Spirit, soundtrack for "Dances with Wolves") became a friend of the band early in their career. It was under Buffett's direction at his Bison Head studio in Milwaukee that ON A SUN recorded an unreleased 3-song E.P.  Two of the tracks recorded in their initial sessions with Puerta and Buffett were remixed and utilized on the band's first full-length CD, "Watershed," slated for release in March 2005.

"Not only does ON A SUN's music take you on unexpected twists and turns, but the lyrics have an originality and angle that is imaginative and rare,” offers Puerta.

Also in March, the independent feature film Side Effects, featuring "Watershed's" opening track "Forgive” and starring Katherine Heigl ("Roswell," "Romy &Michelle's High School Reunion” and most recently the television show "Grey's Anatomy"), will debut at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California.

Hitting on a combination that works, their introspective approach has already caused fans, newspaper critics, radio personalities and other local musicians to regularly compare ON A SUN to a diverse array of artists such as Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Oasis, The Police, Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

The McWilliam brothers feel that ON A SUN was simply meant to be. All three members believe it wasn't until they came together as a band that they began to truly understand the possibilities. A brotherly connection plus authentic chemistry place ON A SUN in a position to accomplish whatever they attempt
